چکیده

We report on direct stabilization of a femtosecond laser by a high-finesse passive optical cavity. Detailed comparison of two distinct stabilization schemes leads to new understanding of the optimum conditions for cavity stabilization and limitations on the ability to transfer the frequency stability of the cavity to the microwave domain. The stability of the frequency comb is explored in both the optical and the radio frequency domain. With an independent, stable cw laser, we verify that the linewidth and stability of the optical comb components, respectively, reach below 300 Hz and 5310−14 at 1 s averaging time, both limited by the reference cw laser.

A medium-finesse optical cavity for the stabilization of Rydberg lasers

We describe the design, construction, and characterization of a medium-finesse Fabry–Pérot cavity for simultaneous frequency stabilization of two lasers operating at 960 and 780 nm wavelengths, respectively. The lasers are applied in experiments with ultracold rubidium Rydberg atoms, for which a combined laser linewidth similar to the natural Rydberg linewidth (≈ 10 kHz) is desired. The cavity,...

Contribution of Thermal Noise to Frequency Stability of Rigid Optical Cavity via Hertz-Linewidth Lasers

We perform detailed studies of state-of-the-art laser stabilization to high finesse optical cavities, revealing fundamental mechanical thermal noise-related length fluctuations. We compare the frequency noise of lasers tightly locked to the resonances of a variety of rigid Fabry-Perot cavities of differing lengths and mirror substrate materials. The results are in agreement with the theoretical...

Optical Frequency Combs: From Frequency Metrology to Optical Phase Control

The merging of continuous wave laser-based precision optical-frequency metrology with mode-locked ultrafast lasers has led to precision control of the visible and near-infrared frequency spectrum produced by mode-locked lasers. Such a phase-controlled mode-locked laser forms the foundation of a “femtosecond optical-frequency comb generator” with a regular comb of sharp lines with well-defined f...

Nonlinear dynamics inside femtosecond enhancement cavities.

We have investigated the effect of intracavity nonlinear dynamics arising from enhanced peak powers of femtosecond pulses inside broad-bandwidth, dispersion-controlled, high-finesse optical cavities. We find that for chi(3) nonlinearities, when a train of femtosecond pulses are maximally coupled into a cavity by active stabilization of its frequency comb to the corresponding linear resonances o...
